Monroe County's high school volleyball teams have been actively competing in the early part of their season, engaging in both local rivalries and tournament play. Coral Shores High School's Hurricanes and Key West High School's Lady Conchs have both seen significant action.
Coral Shores Hurricanes
The Coral Shores Hurricanes kicked off their week on August 25th by hosting the Marathon Dolphins. Coral Shores secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Marathon. The Hurricanes utilized their roster, with several players contributing to the win. Abby Leigh recorded five service aces, three kills, three digs, and twelve assists. Celene Walker was perfect from the service line with three aces, adding eleven kills and a dozen digs. Coralyn Frimpter contributed two aces, ten kills, eight digs, and a block, while Maddie Jordan also maintained a perfect service record, adding an ace, nine assists, and five digs.
The Hurricanes faced another in-county challenge two nights later, hosting South Homestead. In a closely contested match, Coral Shores emerged victorious with a 3-2 win. Abby Leigh delivered a strong performance with seven aces, four kills, a block, 21 assists, and 17 digs. Marina Daniel contributed seven kills, a block, and a dig, while Jillian Thiery added six kills and a dig. Maddie Jordan again had a perfect service night, with 17 assists and five digs. Coralyn Frimpter posted two aces, 16 kills, nine digs, two blocks, and an assist, and Celene Walker chipped in with an ace, nine digs, and 19 kills.
Following their home successes, the Hurricanes participated in the Conch Cup tournament on August 28th and 29th. During the tournament, Coral Shores lost matches to Wellington (2-1) and South Fork (2-0).
Key West Lady Conchs
The Key West Lady Conchs also experienced a busy week. On August 26th, they traveled to face their nearby rival, the Marathon Dolphins. Key West defeated Marathon in three sets, securing an in-county win. The match proved competitive, with Marathon pushing Key West to extended play in the third set before the Lady Conchs ultimately prevailed 3-0.
Key West then hosted its annual Conch Cup tournament. The Lady Conchs secured a 2-1 victory against Westminster Academy on August 28th. However, they later lost to South Fork with a score of 2-0 that same evening. The following afternoon, Key West bounced back, defeating Wellington 2-1. This win helped the young team build momentum as they continue to develop their chemistry and performance.
