The Key West Conchs football team began their season late on August 28th, facing the Palmetto High School Tigers. Despite a 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff, lightning delays pushed the start to nearly 9 p.m., leading to a long night for both teams. The Tigers ultimately secured a 35-7 victory over the Conchs.
Conchs Face Unexpectedly Strong Tigers
Key West coach Johnny Hughes acknowledged the Tigers' talent, but was unaware of the additional strength they gained when Booker High School's varsity program folded due to recruiting violations. Athletes from Booker joined nearby teams, including Palmetto, bolstering their roster with top-tier players. This influx of talent, featuring a 6-foot-5 quarterback and imposing receivers, allowed the Tigers to dominate the line of scrimmage against the Conchs. Hughes described the Palmetto team as "loaded," noting the presence of numerous Division I commits. Junior Matthew Oviedo scored the Conchs' sole touchdown on the ground. This week, Key West faces Miami Jackson's Generals in their first district test, an opponent expected to be more evenly matched. The Conchs will begin a three-week road series starting with this game.
Coral Shores Hurricanes Show Tenacity
Coral Shores hosted Westminster Academy on August 28th, holding their own against a team projected to be a strong contender among South Florida's smaller schools. The Lions initially took a 14-0 lead. However, tough defense and an 8-yard touchdown run by Kevin Williams Jr. sparked a comeback for Coral Shores. The momentum shifted further when Hurricane Jack Brown tackled Westminster's quarterback in the end zone for a safety. Charles Royal then scored on a 3-yard run to tie the game.
Marco Gudino's interception briefly suggested a potential turnaround for Coral Shores. However, a subsequent fumble on the next play resulted in a touchdown for Westminster just before halftime. In the second half, David Beltran scored an 8-yard touchdown for the Lions. Despite these efforts, Westminster added three more touchdowns, leading to a final score of 42-20 in favor of Westminster. The Hurricanes accumulated 316 rushing yards, with Beltran contributing 179 yards and nearly 200 all-purpose yards, including a 16-yard reception from Sterling O’Keefe. Royal added 86 rushing yards on 12 carries, and Williams contributed 58 yards. 'Canes coach Ed Holly praised his team's resilience, especially their ability to fight back after falling behind. Although the Hurricanes' record is now 1-2, they remain undefeated in league play and have the potential for a deep postseason run if they can reduce errors and continue improving. "We played better week three than week two," Holly stated. "We played better on offense, defense and special teams. This has been a great learning experience for us." This week, Coral Shores will travel to face Pine Crest, aiming to counter the Panthers' potent spread offense. "If we can tackle in the open field, it’ll be a great game," Holly commented. "If not, it’ll be a long night." The team's performance can be tracked through local sports reporting, such as that found in Keys Weekly.
