Monroe County and the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park are organizing a special event to commemorate America's 250th birthday. The America 250 Florida Keys Pennekamp Paddle Day is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo. The park will offer free admission for the event, with regular operating hours from 8 a.m. to sunset.
Celebrating National and Local Heritage
The event is part of a broader initiative by Monroe County and the Tourist Development Council to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This celebration aims to highlight the unique history, culture, natural resources, and community spirit of the Florida Keys.
Monroe County Mayor Michelle Lincoln stated that America's 250th birthday presents a significant opportunity to honor the nation's and the state's history throughout 2026. She emphasized that the celebration will focus on the distinctive places, people, and experiences that define the Florida Keys. Lincoln added that this particular event at Pennekamp Park allows community members to connect with natural history up close.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is recognized as the nation's first undersea park. It features diverse ecosystems including mangrove forests, tropical hammocks, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. Ann Helmers, president of the Friends group, expressed pride in hosting the community for this special occasion. She described Pennekamp as a vital component of local history and identity, making it an ideal venue for celebrating the nation's milestone. Helmers further noted its status as a world-renowned destination and a cherished treasure of the Florida Keys.
