The Basilica School, formerly known as Mary Immaculate, has officially joined the Sunshine State Athletic Association (SSAA). This move marks a significant step for the school's athletic program, which has been growing since the restoration of Catholic high school education in Key West four years ago.

Athletic Expansion

Membership in the SSAA will enable Basilica student-athletes to compete for conference and state championships. It also aims to create more opportunities for meaningful regular-season and postseason contests. The school currently offers programs in volleyball, cross country, golf, and basketball. Through a partnership with Key West High School, Basilica students can also participate in sports not yet available at their own campus, including football, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, swimming, track and field, tennis, and softball.

“Our hope is that membership in the SSAA will provide these student-athletes with greater opportunities to compete for championships while continuing to build something special here at Basilica,” stated Principal Robert Wright.

This development follows the graduation of the Mariners' first senior class in a generation last spring. The school has seen several Basilica students excel as athletes at Key West High School. A notable achievement was Gloria Slavik, the school's first student-athlete to secure an NCAA volleyball opportunity, signing with Cedar Crest College in Pennsylvania.

Developing Talent

Athletic director Clark Cascio has been instrumental in expanding the school's programs, recruiting coaches, and fostering a culture focused on discipline, teamwork, and character. In August, the Mariner volleyball team is scheduled to host Amber McCray, a distinguished figure in collegiate volleyball, for a two-day advanced player development camp. McCray, a former standout player and coach at the University of Florida, will lead sessions exclusively for Mariner student-athletes.

“We recognize we’re still the newer program in town,” Principal Wright commented. “In many ways, we’re the David to Goliath. But we also know how that story ends. Every year our enrollment grows, our programs become stronger, and our student-athletes gain more opportunities. We are trying to build a school that will serve Key West families for generations to come.”

The Basilica School's commitment to providing comprehensive athletic opportunities underscores its broader mission to serve the Key West community.
