The Upper Keys League of Women Voters is set to host a candidate forum on Wednesday, July 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Coral Isles Church, located at mile marker 90. This event is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for voters to become acquainted with candidates appearing on the Aug. 18 primary ballot.

Key Races on the Ballot

Several significant local races are scheduled to be decided in the upcoming primary. These include positions for County Commission District 2, Mosquito Control Board District 2, County Court Judge, and School Board Districts 1 and 5. Attendees will have a chance to interact with candidates during a meet-and-greet session from 5:30 to 6 p.m., with light refreshments available.

Candidate Discussions and Voting Information

Beginning at 6 p.m., candidates will address questions concerning issues pertinent to Upper Keys voters. Sherie Hodies, Monroe County Supervisor of Elections, is also scheduled to present information on various voting procedures. Topics will include details on early voting, how to locate one's precinct, the process for voting by mail, and accessing sample ballots. This information is crucial for voters preparing for the primary election.

Understanding Primary Voting Rules

The races for County Commission and Mosquito Control Board are partisan. However, due to only Republican candidates qualifying for these positions and no Democratic candidates entering the race, the Republican primary will effectively determine the election's outcome. This situation triggers Florida’s open-primary provision. Consequently, all registered voters, regardless of party affiliation (Republican, Democrat, or independent), are eligible to cast a ballot in these specific primary races. The other races on the ballot are nonpartisan, meaning all registered voters can participate in those as well.
